ABOUT TMJD

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction occurs for a variety of reasons. Trauma to the jaw such as blunt force, surgery, or infection can impact the structure of the joint and cause dysfunction. Clenching of the jaw from stress, anxiety, or night grinding can cause the muscles supporting the jaw to become tight and short leading to pain and headaches. Dental issues such as an uneven bite or new fillings can cause imbalance in the jaw. Symptoms of TMJD are pain in and around the jaw or mouth, headaches around the eyes, temples, and cheekbones, stiffness or difficulty opening the mouth, and crunching and popping noises with jaw movement. Massage Therapists can help relieve the symptoms of TMJD by relieving trigger points in the muscle supporting the jaw, reducing tension in muscles around the neck and shoulders that can be tight from postural related issues.
